Teaching adolescents at a time when the rate of addiction in our country is the highest in history can be scary. Many people have a misunderstanding of addiction and view any level of drug use as tragic and forbidden, and this teaches our kids we are not safe to approach with this topic. It’s important for the community to understand addiction, the purpose of drug use and the value of having an open mind and open communication with adolescents.

The War on Drugs is ineffective, and we need to transition away from “Just Say No” towards “Just Say Know”; we need to change the story, introduce harm reduction and stress the importance of delaying use until later in life.

Together we will reframe the concept of addiction as it is often portrayed in the media, and discuss how we can keep children safe and connected.

This program is offered as an outreach service to the greater education community in and around Southern New Jersey. There is no cost for the workshop or lunch.

THIS WORKSHOP WILL FEATURE:

Dr. Sandy Gibson, Ph.D., LCSW
Dr. Sandy Gibson, Ph.D., LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Associate Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at The College of New Jersey. She received her masters and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland with a specialization in addictions. For six years, she served as a substance abuse counselor in a community-based agency that offered intensive day and outpatient treatment, as well as inpatient detox and methadone maintenance programs. The trauma histories and social injustices of her clients were intolerably prominent, leading her to complete her Ph.D. in order to research better prevention methods and intervention strategies, as well as strengthen her advocacy skills. Upon completion of her Ph.D., Gibson became a Study Director at Temple University’s Institute for Survey Research, where she wrote and directed federal research studies, securing over $2 million in addiction-related research grants.
