Parents need to plan ahead in order to maximize services in the final years of schooling and to ensure their son or daughter with special needs receives appropriate services in adulthood. This workshop will discuss parents’ rights and school obligations under the IDEA’s transition requirements and describe government services which are vital when an individual with disabilities turns 18 and 21. Attendees will also learn about guardianship and alternatives to guardianship for those who need support with decision-making.
Access to SSI, Medicaid and Medicaid Waivers, DDD, DVRS, day and residential services will be discussed. Specific assessment and service planning tools will be reviewed.
